Bio-economic modelling of financial incentives

PhD position on bio-economic modelling of financial incentives for tuna fisheries management

(5b)

We are looking for

We are inviting applications for a PhD student on bio-economic modelling of financial incentives for tuna fisheries management in the Indonesian EEZ. You will conduct independent research on if and how market-based policy instruments improve tuna management. You will first develop a bio-economic model of the multi-species and multi-fleet tuna fishery in the Indonesian EEZ, with a possible extension to the Western Pacific. You will then analyse whether market-based instruments, such as certification and (transferrable) effort schemes, can achieve a sustainable, efficient, and equitable tuna fishery in the study regions. The research takes place under the BESTTuna program; attached to Environmental and Natural Resource Economics group (ENR), the Aquaculture and Fisheries group (AFI) and in partnership with the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science at Bogor University (Indonesia).

BESTTuna is a major research programme funded by the Interdisciplinary Research and Education Fund (INREF) that supports cooperative research between research groups at Wageningen University (The Netherlands), Bogor University (Indonesia), The University of the Philippines, the University of the South Pacific (Fiji) and the WWF-Coral Triangle Initiative. The objective of BESTTuna is to study the design of effective and equitable state and market-based governance arrangements to achieve sustainable trans-boundary tuna management in the Coral Triangle and Western Pacific. As an interdisciplinary programme emphasis is given to  social, political, economic and ecological dimensions. A substantial amount of work will be carried out in Wageningen but also in Indonesia based at Bogor University (IPB).
